Turned out to be all about placement. I needed to have my code fall directly after:

$template_hook[postbit_userinfo_left]

I just switched my forums over to using postbit_legacy. I was then reminded by my users that I had not placed my custom profile fields over under the user name like I had in the normal postbit template....

If I type in url/forums/index.php - the forum comes up

If I type in /url/forums/ - the forum does not come up, just the blank page.
