When I reverted the email back to its default text, the username appeared again. Then I re-did my edits, making sure not to touch the lines with the {2} variables at all, and again the email did not replace...

I am having this same problem. I believe I am also running CGI instead of mod_php. It looks like mod_php5 is an option for me, but the server won't let me make that switch myself. Is this the only way...
