I suppose I'll have to go add a bunch of conditional logic to the postbit template.

This is close. From what I can tell though, the user still has to go into the User CP and select update their Display Group. This makes the secondary group title optional, not mandatory.

I have the same problem, and it does not happen with IE, but happens with Safari.

It works with Internet Explorer, and fails with Safari on a Mac under OS-X.
