ok, it looks like it was an file upload problem. I ended up zipping the files, uploading the zip and extracting the zip on the server using the cpanel file manger tool.

Thanks for all the replies. The htaccess file had been modified and it was hidden way, way, way to right of the file so it could be seen. I think it is all fixed now.

How do I configure the htaccess so old links to forum/ now go to the site root?

I am running a 3.8 forum with a heap of mods and template edits. I want to upgrade to stock standard v4 suite and dump all the mods and template changes.

Is there a way to set forum permissions so Unregistered users can see an image thumbnail for any attached images in a thread but not be able to download the attachments?

Thanks for that. I found and fixed 36 users (out of 8000 odd). I haven't installed any mods for a few months so I wouldn't know which one it was. The random nature of the problem makes it hard to work...
