If put this on most of my forums it would kill it, too slow to load, jumpy when scrolling, fonts too small, no enough contrast between the background and the text, feels bloated and the list goes on....

FWIW the last time i run some tests (about 12 months ago) i threw up matching pages, one with keyword URL's and the other without. I linked them from the same page using the same non-optimized anchors....

Strange, did you put it at the very top of your htaccess before RewriteEngine or any other rules?
I guess another thing you can try is paste this in Notepad:
