That's a rather.. not helpful statement, Steve. I'd expect more from a CSR. I understand the issues with Safari as a developer myself, but come on. At least offer the man something more than that browser...

Personally I find Transmit to be the best FTP solution on OS X, but if you're restricting the list down to free software.. Cyberduck would be the best #2, in my mind.

That's a pretty generic DB error, you might want to specify exactly what you're doing.

Are you simply clicking install on the install.php script and getting that error readout?

Well the files are definitely being overwritten, I've even removed the files and uploaded the newer ones to assure this.

I agree there must be something going on in the upload itself, but...

I have the same situation. I have switched my FTP program (Transmit) to ASCII mode and even after overwritting the original file, still receive this notice when running the diagnostic.

Granted, but the code has been fixed and will in due time be upgraded. Clearly he should be checking it against older versions of Safari, but there comes a point where you want to develop further, so...
