What in your experience is the bottleneck in such a large setup. webserver or mysql server? CPU, hard disk, network or other?...

The issue is that vBulletin is not multi-web-server aware. Therefore if some bit of data is stored on the webserver (eg. attachments in filesystem or a local memcached copy of the datastore) then changes...
