I think hooks really need to come back. I do not know why they needed to close the other thread. Maybe they should make vbulletin 6 with hooks.

If you upgrade to 5 your forum will be:
buggy, slow and there will be hardly any features. If you upgrade to anything, upgrade to 4. 4 is better than 3.8.
