You should need to CHMOD all folders to 777, they will not inherit from their parent directories.

I notice that when I add a new phrasetype, I must go to the phrase manager in my adminCP, find a random phrase in that phrasetype and press Edit/Save so it'll register and store...

I like.. but I think there's too much space between category title and content.. Maybe that orange and white strip is too much, consider removing the top white strip? So its Category > Orange strip...
