just as an update, i should have tested first but this problem does NOT happen when using firefox, only IE7, i have updated, cleaned cookies, cleaned temp files & cleaned history and it still happens...

just to update this: i upgraded from 3.6.1 to 3.6.4 , reverted all templates and reinstalled all of the same hacks and the problem viewing the attached images disappeared, so who knows what it was but...
