vB 2.3.2 400+ users runs slow

I have a duel 3ghz machine with 2 gigs of ram running vB and when we reach 400 to 500 simultaneous users it really drags. I have looked at cpu usage and it goes up and down, but roughly stays at around...

Is it possible to turn on custom avatars per user?
