I am a site admin. One of our actual (real) users is showing 4,294,697,296 notifications for his own profile. He is not a spammer. Any insights?

I have a user reporting over 4 billion profile notifications... When you click on the notifications link in the top right, it only shows two, one of which is overwritten visually by the 4 billion number....
