What's this "hacker" trying to do?

A banned user whom i know has some skilz periodically attempts to access our forum using a URL that ends thusly:

/home/servername/public_html/forum/\\

What's he trying to do...

Um... the string "search.php?do=getnew" doesn't appear in my navbar template. (Feeling stupid.)

Is there any way to block posts to a forum from appearing in the "New Posts" listing? I don't want to restrict access to this forum. I just don't want posts listed under "New Posts"....

How does the forum start-up when someone enters a domain name? Is there something in the HTaccess file in the publicHTML folder that makes it happen? If so, well I overwrote that file. The HTaccess file...

People can't access my forum unless they type the full url: www.xxx.net/fourm/index.php. Just typing the domain name produces server generated screen. Please help.

I really screwed up my upgrade to 3.8.5 (LINK).

My question is this: can I just do a new install of vB4, not an upgrade, and have it read from my existing DB?
