How do I change the length of time that a user stays logged in?

It's pretty short right now, and when composing a long post, one has to re-login before the post can be submitted.

Somehow I've managed to turn off the Posting Rules that allow vB code, Smiles, and IMG code to be used in posts....

vB code is Off

My rotating banner ad separates the forum name block from the User Navigation Bar and as you can see from the attached image, it leaves a gray area on each side of the banner.
