Will upgrading from 3.8.x to 4.1.x clean up my database?

One of my threads almost it 12,500 replies before accessing it starting bringing down my site. I'm wondering if there is a way to limit the number of replies to a thread before it locks itself? For example,...

Guests can view 6 of the forums, but they cannot post. However, I have unlocked the Technical Support forum and given full access to unregistered/guests in that forum
