I have the exact same problem, never bothered to search for a fix as the avatars are uploaded and displayed correctly.

I have done this in the past without using impex, you can switch the domain names without moving anything. Your hosting provider justs needs to allow it.
This comes down to changing some map names...

In the past there was also a problem with the passwords not being imported, not sure that it's still a problem.

If you don't answer it you can't register, image...

Today I downloaded 4.1.3 and uploaded all files to the server.

I then used the install/upgrade.php script and keeps saying:

Not sure about the other 4 but in order to have the advanced box you can double click the quick reply button or the reply with quote that should work...

You want a clean install but still use the current database?

You could take a look at the impex system to import from 3.8 to a new database.
