There is a setting in the admincp for default preview length (in characters). Note you can also control it on a per article basis using the prbreak bb tag.

Where did you find that code at? That does not appear to be default bulletin code and I would agree is probably your problem.

You certainly can but it's not in the grid layout. Edit the section that is your homepage and change the content columns to 2.

There is also a setting in the admincp (vBulletin Settings) to enter a default number of characters to show in the preview.
