  • Is this a good fit?

    Hello all,

I currently have a Proboard. I personally don't like it. Neither do my members. I have been looking into a vBulletin for some time now. I am opening a store to go along with my forums, within 2-3 days. But, I don't have the forum. Right now I am shaky on spending all the money, when I am still a little confused on a few things. Is there a lot of coding involved? On my site I would like a money system, a feedback system, and a lot more. I know little about coding, would it be hard? Also, do you have to download anything? And my final question, is Do you have to have a host to have the board (So do you have to have a domain name, etc?)

    All help is greatly appriciated.

    Thanks,

    Phill11

    Hi there

I think this question fits better in the pre-sales forum, maybe a staff member is nice enough to move the thread.

Having said that, I am happy that you have an interest in the vBulletin forum software. Hopefully it is what could power your site for end-user feedback on your store and products.

At the moment Jelsoft doesn't offer any hosting or domain registration - they only sell the forum software vBulletin. You can try to find a hosting provider that sells domain names and hosting accounts that offer PHP and MySQL support. Those are the requirements to have vBulletin running. If you already have a store - it is most likely good enough to also host the forum on, but if I understand you correctly, you were still looking around.

vBulletin is great for a feedback system, pre sales questions and faq system and discussions, announcement and updates of your store. Many sites use it for this.

The coding involved depends on what you need. If you need to integrate the sections of your site with the userbase of vBulletin, then yes. You need to code that. But vBulletin has permission system, so you can have (i.e.) different usergroups. For visiters, members and users who require product or service feedback, .. so only those with permission see certain forums and can post there, and/or get support.

    Download anything?
Yes, after purchase, you have to download the .zip from the member area, unpack it, set the database details in the config file and upload the unpacked stuff. Then run install.php from the browser and it will be installed. After installation you can setup your forums and permissions through the browser, on the admin control panel and then you are ready to go. vBulletin is hosted on a hosting account at a hosting provider. Jelsoft doesn't offer this. (right now)

I hope this answers a few of your questions, if you have more, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the help. But the thing is the store is an eBay store. So its run on eBay. I have my own link and stuff, but eBay is I guess the domain "Runner". But on Proboards, You can just copy and paste other users code (They share it), and its as easy as that. Is that all you have to do here, or do you have to make your own code?

If the code is a simple Profile field on Proboards, you shouldnt have any problems with vB

All you do is paste the code into your Headers/Footers. Its very simple. So you think vB is easier? Do you have to write your own code, or just paste it?
