You don't have to renew, unless you want software updates. Renewing an owned license only costs $30.

You are not renewing the licence, you can keep the owned licence for life.

The $30 is for renewing access to the members area allowing you to download upgrades.

However you can pay the $30 whenever you want to.

Correct. You will not be able to download new releases (upgrades) until you renew your access @ $30 (prices subject to change), but you can run your board forever.

Your still entitled to support and access to other sites such as vBulletin Templates and vBulletin.org after the download access has expired.

As poolking said you only have to pay the $30 when you want to upgrade, be this as soon as the license expires or at a time which is suitable.
