well im thinking of starting a message board that i may one day make a little money at... well at least that is the idea.... but i dont know any computer language...im a very technical minded person and learn fast...... but my question is... do i need to know html...java...or any computer language??

You do not need knowledge of PHP or MySQL, although it is helpful, especially if you want to add hacks available at www.vbulletin.org. At least basic HTML knowledge is required IF you want to change the way vB looks (not including the basic color changes, which can be made very easily.).

Agreed. Changing the appearance of the board will require a basic understanding of HTML (can be picked up in minutes), but day-to-day administration is simple with just a web browser.

To install vBulletin, all you need to do is:

1) Download vBulletin
2) Edit a configuration file
3) Run install.php

Setup wasn't an issue -- the installation instructions were straightforward from my point of view, though I don't remember the specifics.

I'm comfortable at a Linux command line, but was impressed with the ease of installation.

Just checked -- the installation instructions (brief version) for 2.3.0 are here:

For fresh installations, you must run the install.php file in the admin directory. Before you do this, take the config.php.new file, edit it to contain your details, then upload it as config.php to the server. To start the installation, open up http://your.site/forums/admin/install.php in you web browser.

More detailed instructions are in the vBulletin online manual.

To install vb:

You need a Data Base, the UserName and the Password to access that data base. You manage your DB and User/Pw who have access to them in your Cpanel (provided by your host) for example.

- You need the data base Name, UserName and Password to access the DB (for configuration file).
- You need to edit the configuration file (ie: in note pad)
- You need to use a ftp client to upload the files to your host (server)
- You then run the installation and click next on the pages there (easy) and do what it says during the installation.

You end up with the default look of vb (similar to the one you are viewing now). After that you add the forums and manage them in your forum admin control panel. (have to learn the vb management features - they rock!) If you want to add features/hacks from www.vbulletin.org some html, php is needed.

If you only want to change the look of the forums its always good to know some html. Vb has a template editor (the visual parts that make up the forum) to change the look of the forum. The templates are made of simple html and you would have to know html to edit them but it all depends on the level of change you want to make. If you only want to change the colors of the forum it is very simple to do. (dont realy need to know html)
