no i mean a cd key to open/install the software and all files should be encrypted of course. Adding security to places where it's not needed is useles of course, adding a system like what described could be the solution to many piracy problems. It's always good to new things that haven't been tried before.

Vbulletin is visible source. Someone can open it and remove the key, they can also change the code so it will work with no key. Then these vbulletins will be released just like the ones that have the call home feature removed can be found on the internet. Adding the key will do absolutely no good.
