  • maybe a good idea

does vb has a cd key system or some kind of authentication protection?
if not this is maybe a good idea...

When you order a vb license with all your personal information, pay the price and then you will be granted acces to the member area where you get yer vb forum or however you gte it, and when you confirmed you have it someone from vb will mail you an activation key. Simply add a security system to the installation software so that you can't install/extract it and it's useles if you don't confirm you received the forum, because you can't install it. Or you must install it on your harddrive, fill in the key and then assign your host. And like hl make a cd key 1 version only fits 1 key and create it a bit like that pretty good privacy program to encrypt e-mail. that system is very good and even the best computers can't break that encrytion. I don't really know how it works but it's a damn fine program Or even safer someone from vb mails you the vb files... with all piracy going on extra security ideas are always nice.

    EDIT: sorry wrong forum

AFAIK, with vBulletin being open source, all someone would have to do is remove the part requiring the activation...
Seems like a very good idea, but couldn't this be circumvented like the call home featurE? correct me if wrong...

Yep. Even some mods get those mixed up on occasion.

vb is closed source otherwise all other board makers would use all the code used in vb, and get all the extra and cool options. When you put a cd key in vb that would eridicate such a big hole in the vb security, so there's less piracy. And that pretty good privacy system is waterproof. And use the 1 key 1 license trick. Works damn good

if we had a license key what is to stop someone from just opening the code and removing it? The visible source of it allows it and if we try to hide the db schema or the likes this can be easily undone by just doing a database dump from a fresh copy.

Start a texteditor of your choice and open a file of your vB copy. You see the code, right? So it's visible source. You get the idea.
An example of closed source would be your texteditor or your Internet Explorer, you can't just open the files and mess with them.

This would only make sense then the files are encrypted with ZEND.

But then, no on could hack vB and all the hacks are a great feature of vB. I just dropped a better - but encrypted - product for an "early beta" - but unencoded - product.

But, perhaps jelsoft could create a encoded Demoversion of vB 3.0.

If you used that, wouldn't that kind of make it a little hard to add hacks and everything?
