By making Events a type of Topic Content, people can reply, add attachments, provide coordinates or address for a map (if you have the proper Google Key added to the system) and they can be searched. You can show events in a standard search module. They also show on the Calendar page, which is actually a specialized search display.

There are also "Event Highlights" you can setup in the admincp to configure the background\font color of different types of events. When posting an event, the highlights show up similar to thread prefixes for the user to select in the drop down box.
