With the upcoming release of vBulletin 3, I wanted to check to see if an import script for Discus/Discus Pro was in the works. Bottom-line, this will determine whether I renew my member area next year.

If you search this forum, you will see that people have been periodically asking for this import script. Discus is a great script, but one that works off of PERL/CGI, which demands a great deal of server load and is slow. Its development has waned, and I think you'd be providing something for a healthy contingent of possible switchers to vBulletin.

I was in e-mail/PM contact with Scott this summer, who was cordial and polite, but after a few weeks, just ignored my follow-up contacts. At the time, I wasn't pressed for this, and resisted the temptation to be persistent, much less pressuring. I'm disappointed, but not ready to give up on this... yet.

Because of the upcoming release of vBulletin 3 and the condition and availability of importers; i.e. for some products and not for others, the whole import system was taken back to the drawing board. It is being rewritten so that once it is complete, developing modules to be able to import from different boards will be a lot quicker.


Once the main system is developed (importer system) and tested I/we will being writing the modules for the different systems we wish to import from.

So in answer yes, there will be an importer for Discuss. Once the main system has been finished and is ready.

Can we expect a FULL (i.e. polls included) importer for UBB.classic 6.5 as well? Because I've been waiting for this for a year. Basically, I'll be switching as soon as this is available, but so far, not much has been done in that direction.

Yes, you can expect this. Right now Jerry is working on the import system for vB3 and this includes resolving any outstanding issues with the currect import scripts.

Hi Jerry -- thank you for the prompt and definitive reply. If you need any data (MySQL) files or anything related to Discus, please let me know. Discus uses flat text files, I believe. Anyhow, it's good to know that I can put off re-posting everything from the existing board for awhile and try the importer. The rationale for rethinking the importer system and all really makes sense and I applaud your team for eliminating chances for confusion. It's comforting to know the rationale. Thank you again for taking the time to share your perspective and status of the project.

Thanks for the offer of help, when the time comes for the Discus module I will get back to you. I'm glad you agree with the decision to deal with the importer system as a whole, this is because of the increased complexity of the vB3 system and the level of support needed with the vB2 import scripts.

Once we have a statement and at the correct time I would expect something in announcements about the new import system.

There is an importer for vB2 for importing from XMB, that has been tested wit 1.8 yes.
