    so what do I need?

I want to start a forum on Ecrustean Ornothopodal Kenetics. Or maybe something else.

What do I need to have a forum people can read on their computer and phone?

Is it a one-time cost or do you keeping paying and paying and paying?

    Thanks, dudes!

A vB4 license is a one-off cost however you will also need to buy a domain name and hosting for it. vBulletin requires a web server that includes PHP (minimum version 5.2) and MySQL (minimum 4.1.0) installed. As long as you choose a host that meets these requirements you will be able to install and run our software.

Most credible hosts now support both PHP and MySQL, and can run our software. We do not make official recommendations, but we do have a hosting review forum here:

Discuss PHP and MySQL hosting here. Find out which hosts people like, and which to stay well clear of.

You can also look at http://www.webhostingtalk.com, an independent review site. Sometimes you will find hosting specials there that aren't available elsewhere on the web.
    Vote for:

    - Admin Settable Paid Subscription Reminder Timeframe (vB6)
    - Add Admin ability to auto-subscribe users to specific channel(s) (vB6)

Thanks, Trevor. So what would I need to buy for this?

        A domain name
        A host for your site.
        Then vBulletin.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

Thanks. I'm confused because there are more than one kind/variety of vBulletin. Which one will allow me to have a forum that can be used from computers and from phones? And just to make sure I'm looking at the same thing, what is the cost?

          Thanks,
          Jim

You'd need either a forum classic license (just the forum, only 30 days of support) or a publishing suite license ( forums, cms, blogs, support for the life of the product).

Mobile phones can access both without any additional extras via their mobile browsers. If you want branded applications for iOS and Android, that costs extra (developer fees/renewals, OSX computer, and money to us).

Also, the licenses themselves are non-expiring.

Thank you. If I buy a license, can I use it to create more than one forum site, or is it one license per forum?

One license is good for one active installation of the software/.
