vBulletin's PayPal integration is limited to selling Subscriptions.

So you can create three subscriptions. (Prices are just for an example

Course 1 - $5 / month
Course 2 - $10 / month
Course 3 - $15 / month

Before you create these subscriptions however you must first create usergroups to handle everything.

My suggestion would be to make Course 1, Course 2, and Course 3 usergroups and add them as "additional" (AKA Secondary) usergroups to your users.

All users by default are put into Registered Users when they initially register.

Create these new Course usergroups in Usergroup Manager in Admin CP... They should have No permissions to do anything- they are only going to be used to grant access to specific channels (forums) where your course materials will be stored. So you also need to make channels (forums) for Course 1, 2, and 3.

In Channel Management in Admin CP -> Channel Permissions edit the permissions for Course 1, 2m and 3 forums. Make sure Registered Users don't have permissions to do anything in those forums- disable access for any other usergroups you want, probably all of them except Administrators and possibly Moderators/Super Moderators.

Give the Course 1 Usergroup access to only the Course 1 forum... but give the Course 2 usergroup access to both the course 1 and 2 forums, and so one with Course 3 group.

Only once the forums and usergroups have been created and setup go to the Paid Subscriptions manager and add the new subscription for each course. In the subscription you will check the box to add paid users to the secondary usergroups, not change their main usrergroup which will remain registered users.

When the paid subscription expires, if not renewed, they will lose that usergroup and therefore lose access to the courses.

can students sign up to membership with say course 1 then when they have completed they can upgrade the account by buying course 2 ? so when they buy it automatically upgrades the account to let them see the content in both course 1 and 2 without having to set up a completely new account?

They can purchase multiple paid subscriptions.
