  • Ad/banner management built-in?

    Is there a built-in module that handles banners and their rotation from within the Admin CP?

  • #2
    Banners yes, rotation no. It's a very basic placement system.

      Hopefully VBulletin builds in a way to rotate banners, etc. Doesn't make sense to just have static banners.

      There is a mod available to rotate banners. I really try to stay away from adding too many mods (conflicts, etc).

      So I am hoping this becomes a new feature built into Vbulletin at some time.

        A simple built-in rotation system would be great as most of us don't need anything complicated but just a handful of basic functions like rotation.

        In the meantime you can just use a few lines of code and put your banner code in a text file (for instance adfile.txt), making sure that you use one line for each banner (just remove the line breaks). The system will then randomly choose one line and pull the banner code from that line.

        Code:
        <?

        $fc = join("",file("adfile.txt"));

        $fc = "$fc\n"; $spl = split("\n",$fc);

        srand((double)microtime()*1000000);
        $rndnum = (rand()%(count($spl)-1));

        echo $spl[$rndnum];

        ?>

          The point of the system is an easy way to inject adcode into specific places in the software. Its not meant to be a fully featured advertisement system. It would be in your best intrests to find a third party ad management system and use its code in vBulletin. It would take a long to time to match even half the features of a great ad management program.

            A full featured ad management system is not needed. Now a simple way to rotate a few banners is.

              We use a very simple system where the ads are provided by an old clunky ad system (but it works) that tracks clicks.

              I've got some wrapper code that you can use to insert the adverts into vB4 (have a look at our site).
              I use an iFrame -- it is easy to do.

              Eg: Ad Top Of Page/Below navbar...
              Code:
              <div style="text-align:center;">
              <table class="page" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr align="center">
              <td align="center"><iframe id="ah1" src="http://www.ausphotography.net.au/ads/details.php?action=showbanner&w=400&h=60&apprand1" width="400" height="60" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" hspace="0" vspace="0" frameborder="0" scrolling="no">&nbsp;</iframe> &nbsp;&nbsp; </td>

              <td align="center"><a href="http://shop.ausphotography.net.au" alt="Shop"><img src="http://www.ausphotography.net.au/images/shop1.gif" border=0/></a> <br />

                Hey ricktas, if I wanted to adapt this into my own forum but with a single banner rather than two banners side by side, what code would I change here?
