I plan to buy vb but I have 1 last question. Are attachments safe? What if someone uploads a virus or something harmeful to the server?

Attachments are added to the database and, as such, they cannot be executed on the server. Therefore they represent no threat to the server. However there's nothing to stop someone from uploading a file with a virus that can later be downloaded and executed on user's machines.Steve Machol, former vBulletin Customer Support Manager (and NOT retired!)

Also note ..
vBulletin has an Administrators Control Panel, where you can enable/disable options etc. One of these options are restrickting the attachments. This can be done by size of the attachment, or only certain usergroups or guests having rights to download attachments, etc.
The feature you might want to have a look at when you purchased vBulletin (see my sig for direct link) is the option to restrict filename extensions! You can lets say only allow .txt files or .mp3 or .whatever.
