  • Is the CMS what i need?

    Hi guys and girls.

I currently own vb4 and use it at http://forums.eteknix.com whilst my site/blog uses wordpress at http://www.eteknix.com

Obviously nothing is integrated all that well, in fact the only integration is RSS from the main site being published onto the forum in the specific category.

I've since installed vbadvanced cmps but i find it's quite restricting and requires the forum quite a lot to function (e.g create a thread to output onto the main page which isn't what i want)

I'm trying to make my site more integrated by using a cms/portal with vbulletin forums but i don't want it to look like a portal.

    Some examples are:

    http://www.hardwareheaven.com/ (LOVE the design)
    http://www.hexus.net/ (LOVE the functionality)

As you can see, they are both integrated with the forums and are quite stylish too, with functionality.

    What i want/need is:
    1. Will Vbulletin's CMS restrict me with the design as i'd like to have something that doesn't look like a portal (e.g the first link and my current site) - Any examples????
    2. Will i be able to create pages/articles for my reviews?
    3. Will each article create a thread in the forum of my choosing so that the forum is used for comments on each specific article instead of me having to wait for RSS to update and creating a link manually?
    4. Will each article have a section underneath for comments that is pulled from the forum due to at the moment, i have comments on forum's and on articles and i want something that is all together so no matter if you comment on the site, or the forum, it's actually the same place (example is - http://gaming.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=26569 and scroll to the bottom, the comments are actually ripped from - http://forums.hexus.net/gaming-news/...y-explode.html yet only a link to the article is on the forum thread as opposed to vbadvanced, the whole article would be posted in the thread, which isn't what i want)

Many thanks, i'm hoping i can get the answers i'm looking for and that the CMS is the right product for me.

      1. vBulletin will not restrict you in any way you can edit everything you see the only down side is that you need to know html, php, css and mysql to rely rebuild it.
      2. 4.1 should add reviews and Custom Content Type Builder so you will be able to do so.
      3. No idea
      4. This is custom coding if you can write scripts you should be able to do it.

        Thanks for the reply we_are_borg.

when is 4.1 due out? Will there be a massive difference between reviews and articles then?

Sadly i don't know how to write scripts

I want the site and forum to be integrated, so only want one central place to comment.

Also, when a new article is published, is there a way to send a mail out to the community to tell them? Like an auto update?

        Thanks,

        Andy

            Ok thanks.

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the forum for comments, as i don't want some comments under the article, and some in a thread. Will be too messy.

Just found out there is a mod for this and people are asking to make it behave default like that. See http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=230417

Voted in that thread but that is more to do with promotion of threads compared to full blow articles.
