How tech-savvy must you be to upgrade from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4?

How hard is it to do by yourself, really? My hosting company installed 4.0.3 to my server for me at no charge, but will charge now to upgrade my site to 4.0.4.

I added some coding myself (altered postbit templates, etc.) & have AddonChat's plugin installed.

I would love to avoid paying the host company to do the installation for me, but I'm really scared of losing data/settings or ruining my site.

Any info at all would be helpful, I have read things online but am worried it might be outdated since 4.0.4 is so brand new. Input from anyone who has upgraded to 4.0.4 already? Pretty please?

    I would wait for 4.0.5.

But if you're okay with: Taking a backup, uploading files, running the upgrade script. You'll be fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to apply some hotfixes as well or was that for a different version?

Thanks Zachery. Is there an estimate on 4.0.5's release? It's the Facebook integration that I want from 4.0.4, but if 4.0.5 is coming out within a month or so then I could wait.

Okay, thanks! I *think* I can do it myself if it's just a matter of uploading files via FTP... I guess I should turn vBulletin off on my site while I upgrade?

And should I disable all my plugins while I upgrade & then turn them back on?

Yes... once uploaded you run the install/upgrade.php script. Ensure you have a backup, ensure you have disabled third party products and plugins, and it is that simple. Just ensure you have a DB backup, because software can and does have glitches at random times that has nothing to do with anything other than... a glitch can occur, which can totally screw things up without a backup.

Thanks so much. I used my cPanel to download a Home Directory backup & a MySQL backup. I really hope that's enough lol. They are .gz files. Idk if any of this means they backed up all my vB AdminCP settings though.
