Whats the Deal with the Prices?

Hi, I have been looking into a paid forum script for some time now. I have decided Vbulletin over IPB, but I have a question. Whats with the prices? Aren't they a bit extreme? There is absolutely no way I would be allowed to spend that much on it. Also, I have no other option, I need the rep system and all the other fancy goodies, not phpbb, SMF or Mybb. What do you suggest I do?

You either pay the price or you don't, to be perfectly honest with you. If you want the features then you are going to pay the price.

You may find some vb 4.x licenses for sale on some vb third party support forum, and may get a slightly cheaper price, but that would be at best you will achieve any discount.

The prices are one-off prices - you do not need to renew a license or pay to access newer versions of vBulletin 4 once you've bought a license.

5.x will require you to purchase again for the length of that series, guestimated 2 - 3 years series life.

You still get to use 4.x for lifetime, once purchased. 5.x is not expected until 2011 / 2012. (Personally, I expect it to be the latter of the two based on current product momentum)

Prior to 4.x, there was a window to purchase at near half the cost. If they repeat that cycle, then you will pay much less for it as an existing customer more than likely.

Coming from MyBB i can tell you there is all those mods available.
Not all free, but loads are. I know of one site that costs $5 for a subscription and then there available with support.
Honestly from what i have seen so far with MyBB vs VB i would say MyBB has more to offer. Far more really. Sure perhaps the vbseo is a big winner. But its extra!
I think for the price of vb currently you could pay someone the same and get them to install MyBB for you and all mods and custom theme and loads more.

All that said. I hope to be able to offer the exact opposite answer in 6 months to a year Dunno.

Holly crap. You mean there could be another release in under a year and i would have to pay again???!!!

If they will offer again discount like they did with vb 4 from what I heard, then as stated above licensed customers will profit a lot from that. And it will be more than a year btw until vb 5 comes out I think but we will cross that bridge when that time comes

About vB vs MyBB, there is really no compersion in every way, shape or form. MyBB is a cheap poor immitation vB. Those guys don''t have originality. And don''t get me started on their community. Totally unmature and run by kids who ban people and close threads simpley because they don''t agree with them. I would advice everyone to stay away from that crappy MyBB forum/community.

                      Cant argue there borbole.
The community is not so bad as much as the staff are. And as you said. There largely ran by children who act on emotions rather than rules.
But ultimately free will always be that. I have said before free=children. I know thats an unfair generalisation but you know what i mean. You get what you pay for.
And also agree that vB is the forum leader and the likes of MyBB are simply imitations. However i have to say they do have a vast external community.
There are many other sites that offer support with it. Perhaps there is with vB. I am not sure yet. In time i will however.
Again as i stated. Do i regret the move or cost? No i dont. I sort of feel proud i can offer vB to my community. All be it in a 90% functionality to what it was.
I do and always will wear the copyright with a little pride.

Great to see how you find time to get a new customer but you don't see to mind questions concerning the tax.. Please answer those topics too!
