I'm starting a forum that will have many cities, with each city having the same 50 subforums. Is there a limit to how many forums/subforums I can create, or is it a matter of ease of maintenance? If it's the latter, is there a way to better manage the list of forums/subforums in the Forum Manager since the list will become quite cumbersome in no time? Thanks.

Couldn't you think of a way to structure it differently? It is better to try and think of a structure that doesn't keep duplicating the same sections over and over.
For example, instead of having sub forums for every city, could you instead create prefixes for each of the subjects those sub forums were going to be and then you would just need forums for the actual cities?
Or the other way around, with forums for the subjects and prefixes for the cities? Either way would work, and members can sort by prefix when viewing a forum.
Don't forget you also have thread tags that can be used to search and sort content also.Retro Amiga gaming. Come visit us as http://www.classicamiga.com

I'm trying really hard to figure out how to structure it differently. Issue is that the subforums within each city aren't necessarily the same. Not that this is what my forum will be about, but imagine if I wanted to provide a forum for users to talk about the top 50 restaurants in each city. I want to list out each of the top 50 restaurants by name so it's easier for users to find and post accordingly. How should I do that?

You want to structure your forum carefully, especially if it's a startup. If you have hundreds of forums, your site is going to look like there is no activity. Start small, divide later.No...No...Meester vBulletin, he no work right.

I was trying to use restaurants as an example. Maybe I should have said book clubs or even playgrounds? Basically, each set of users will be intently interested in only their book club/playground/subforum (whatever it is). Providing them only a general city forum doesn't offer much value as they'll have to sift through a lot of what they don't care about.

Well, with the use of thread subscriptions, tags and thread prefixes, they really wouldn't have to do much sifting. For example, if a thread was tagged 'My Book Club', they could just click that from the tags or search for that tag and show all threads using that. OR, they could search by thread prefix, which could also be 'My Book Club'. Just some ideas...but having so many sub forums will really make it difficult to manage, from an admin perspective.No...No...Meester vBulletin, he no work right.

There is a realistic limitation due to design that limits you to around 1000 total usergroups and forums/subforums, etc.
I would advise making use of tagging and threa prefixes before making several thousand forums, at least for your own sake,.

I totally agree with the difficult to manage part. Let me be even more elaborate in my example then. Let's say for each city, I have 50 clubs (tennis, golf, atheltic, men's, whatever else) I want to display - Club 1, Club 2, Club 3...Club 50 (clubs in each city will have different names so can't just name them 1, 2, 3...50). How would I make use of thread prefixes and tagging to segment each of the club?
As a user, when I come to the forum, I would love to see the listing of all the clubs in the forum San Francisco so I can easily navigate to Club 1 and then jump to Club 30. Should I generate a search query for each club and display the hyperlinks below the forum (maybe in the description)? Or am I forced to go to the San Francisco forum and just do a search for the tag "Club 1"? Also, how should I handle the tagging if there's a "Club 1" in San Francisco and New York? This also means a user has to tag the post himself right?
Thanks so much for all your help!

I think you are getting a bit confused about forums/sub forums and actual content threads.
Say you were focusing on the US, you could divide your main site into state forums. For example Washington, New York, New Hampshire etc. And within each of these forums you could then just create sub forums for each county within that state to easier separate out your content. Next you create thread title Prefixes, one for each type of club/event/company etc, so for example you could have some club prefixes like Golf Club, Tennis Club, Gym.. etc. Then to actually represent each actual physical club you would post a new thread, titling it with the name of that club and giving it the relevant prefix. You can colour prefixes and name them whatever you like, plus link prefix groups to whatever areas of the forums you wish, so they are very flexible. So you could have the forum Washington/Lincoln County/ and then within that forum you could have a thread looking something like Golf Club: The open experience. Members could then use that thread to discuss that club.
However, even that idea, there would end up being a lot of counties in each state, so instead you could just have the main state forums, and in each tag the threads with the counties each belongs to. So using the same example, you could have a Washington forum, and inside of this the same Golf Club thread, and that thread could have the tags "Lincoln County, Golf Club" and you could even include any other information in the tags for location such as street address, zip code.Retro Amiga gaming. Amiga Harrison - I think I'm understanding what you're suggesting. Let's say I want to allow users to post multiple threads for that club. How would I go about doing that? As far as the tagging, who would do that - the users? I'm not always going to be the one who starts a thread, and it's not realistic to expect users to be good about tagging/giving a thread the relevant prefix.
