  • Several Questions - MS IIS + PHP4, to donation

Ok guys, here's a few for you

first off the higher ups in the project have ignorantly decided to deploy our server as a Microsoft Windows 2000 system running IIS4 - therefor PHP can only be run in CGI mode

will there be any problems running the board?

    Second

The main database is an SQL database - is there anyway to get mySQL and SQL to share data?

    Third
The Site is - Math Challenge 2 - a site dedicated to keeping women in math and engineering jobs. The client is a lady from the University of Iowa, and it's programmed and designed by students of Cedar Rapids Washington High School (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

I am one of those students - part of the programming team.

Right now site is due for some heavy overhauling - last year was the year of "oh yeah, lets make this great.. bleh bleh bleh" vaporware syndrome

this year is seriously getting down to buisness

    --------------- The point
I am in charge of getting the forums up and running - and what they had last year was a java-servlet based system - yuck. I have to convince them of my view that vBulletin is superior and a donated copy would help, we are a non-profit afterall.

Microsoft has already donated thousands of dollars in software - Visual Studio 6, Win2K and IIS, SQL server, etc.

I would definantly appreciate answering the technical questions - and if you can sending the free copy our way would definantly get you a Kudos from all.

    1. That's not a problem. I believe NT 4 can run PHP as an ISAPI module as well, though it's not particularly recommended. I have vB running on an NT 4 server and it's fine.

    2. Not really - you'd need to write a script to update the data between the two database systems. Or you would need to customise one set of scripts (either vB or your existing scripts) to use the other db system.

    3. Please send an email to [email protected] about the free license

If you know Visual Basic programming, you could easily write an NT service that looks at both databases using ADO and ODBC to sychronize the data across the two database systems.

Besides myself, I happen to know 5 or 6 other people who can do so.

You can also check out the other site run by Jelsoft at www.vb-world.com and you should be able to find a couple of VB programmers.

i do not and will not know Visual Basic - it's considerd harmful

                  I know
                  C/C++
Java (rusty, would need to refresh mem)
                  PHP
                  ZShell

and some others - nowhere near a full list - and i naturally know html and js

plus php supports Microsoft SQL - the functions are the same just the names are different

there are good languages, and then there are bad languages

languages you learn that enhance your critical thinking of computer science subjects, and languages you don't learn because they would harm your critical thinking

Visual Basic is a very bad language

                      -----------------

on top of that it's part of Microsoft's Monopolizing strategy

                        Interesting Opinion....

                        I find Delphi/Pascal/php a nice mixture.
