What is the difference between sections and categories? How are they related?

Can I just have one collapsible menu system on the left and can the menu be nested?

A nested menu solution is sorely needed. I'm setting up my first site and have decided to ignore totally "categories." I'm using "sections" to make my menu (why isn't there simply a menu?), but the problem with this is that each "section" links to a page, even if you don't want it to.

I'm also having great, great difficulty in getting the layout manager to work properly in my sections. I'm very frustrated.
