    running beta along side 3.8

Hi I was wondering if I take a copy of the 3.8 database and run the upgrade to 4 then do all the mods and hacks that I want. can I the import the old 3.8 database or change the config.php to point at the other database and run the upgrade script again to sort out the database from the live site?

If you import the old database into your upgraded/modded vb4 database, it will wipe out all the modifications you have made.

If I post CSS and you don't know where it goes, throw it into the additional.css template.

So is there anyway of running a copy of VB and then moving over the database from the live 3.8 site without having to upgrade and then do all the hacks while having the site down?

this has always been a problem and with over 12000 users getting stressed at me when there is a down time a better option would be great

No, there isn't. You have to upgrade properly.

Don't let it stress you out. It will take me two hours to do an upgrade on my site because I go through a checklist and want to do everything in a nice orderly fashion - shut down site, backup database, backup attachments, backup other stuff, transfer all backups to my backup server, then upload new files, etc. I make sure I warn the users a week in advance, then the day before, then a couple hours before, then down she goes! I have a lot of users also and I've never had anyone complain about this.
