Will 4 suite upgrade easily from 3.8?

I have vbulletin 3.8 with custom buttons, background, and flash header.

I want to upgrade to 4 suite. Do I just buy it, and upgrade keeping my original forum design?

If not then I can't do the upgrade, as I am not a programmer

    Thanks.

Also, I saw the picture with the fish on the web age with the suite, so I can have like a newsmagazine thing with my forum right?

Yes you will be able to upgrade to vB4 directly from your version when it's available.

Please note that any custom styles, templates will not be compatible with vB4 and will have to be updated. Add-ons may or may not be compatible. You would have to check with the add-on authors about this.

Thanks Steve, but I want to clarify if I can.

You said when available. The 4 Suite is available now right?

Also you mention custom styles and templates have to be updated. So do I just change the jpg's like I did for 3.8?

The add ons I have are for banners and so I can put You Tube videos in posts on the forum. Is that part of the suite?

I also asked about the photo example you have here:

Am I able to name that long link, say "Example" instead of all that? (IPB has that)

That photo looks like what I want. A news magazine website, with photos, articles, forum etc. Am I able to do that with the 4 suite, and have the design tie in with my forum?

      Is this all doable easily?

      Thanks again.

        I forgot to ask.

With 4 Suite will Admin's only have HTML capability, and will that be added later on in an update?

As of now it is either on or off as one global setting.

        Admin's should have that option.

P.S. There seems to be a HUGE delay in what I type and when it shows up in this post as I am typing.

Spellcheck also went away as a choice now for this post.

vBulletin 4 is still in beta. It will be released when its ready, estimated as to be by the end of the year.

The coding of the templates is completely different. A style cannot be easily "updated" from 3.8 to 4.0.

There is a new Ad Manager that may be able to replace one of your modifications. Video posting is now a feature in vBulletin, both Forum Classic and Publishing Suite.

Don't understand what you're trying to ask.

The image is an actual screenshot of the application - and therefore, it obviously can do it.

Thank you for your response, but since Steve answered me, I believe he would clarify a few things.

Steve, you said you could make 4 Publishing Suite the same style as 3.8 the older version of the forum software. What would it entail?

Why would anyone want to dump their hard work created for their present forums to upgrade?

If someone wants to add a link say with the program IPB (a competing forum software) you can "Name" the link. So instead of clicking http://www.NotaRealLink.com, you could name that "Link" and click it.

In vbulletin you always have the whole url listed which is too long, looks silly, and does not warrant a "feature" button as you could just type the address yourself. I was asking if you could name it.

Again, I ask, if Admin's will have control to use html only. As it stands now, they cannot, unless they let everyone do it, which is not safe.

            Thanks again.

Because vB4 offers new features and a completely new and much improved style architecture. You can't keep "old stuff" forever, if progress outdates it. But of course that's every forum owner's own decision to make.

If someone wants to add a link say with the program IPB (a competing forum software) you can "Name" the link. So instead of clicking http://www.NotaRealLink.com, you could name that "Link" and click it.
You mean like this: vBulletin? If you mean something else, I really don't understand you. If so, just type the word, mark it and click on the link button in the editor toolbar (the globe with the chain link), enter the link, done.
In vbulletin you always have the whole url listed which is too long, looks silly, and does not warrant a "feature" button as you could just type the address yourself. I was asking if you could name it.
As I said, if it's what I described above, it's been possible forever.

That depends on the nature and complexity of your modifications. There is no simple answer.

Not true. Long URLs are compressed.

This can be done with vB as well. Simply, the JS is currently not showing you both the link name and link url field. Anyhow, you can do that by writing the link name in your post (ex. 'Google'), highlight the text, then click on the Insert Link button. Or you can simply enter the bbcode, with link as an argument and link name as the body of the bbcode.

Right, but what was I asking is, can I bring the design of my current forum over and you mentioned yes. Now it is no? A bit confused here, sorry.

I have a background jpeg for the page "color" if you will, and matching type button jpgs, as well as jpeg icons for each thread. In the literature for the new 4 it says you can easily do that.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. Please try explaining again.
Ok, I think one of the above posters understood, so I will try it again. Say I want to post a link and it is http://www.google.com. I click the add a link button and it is still named http://www.google.com.

I want the click-able link to only say Google. Why does the add a link button not have a name the link part like it does in IPB forums? Much easier.

No, there is no option to allow HTML posting by usergroup in vB4.
Why? I was told over a year ago that it would be implemented. Even in the sales info it say additional Admin control and individual user permissions. As the sole owner admin of my forum, I should be able to use HTML myself only.

Lastly. As I am typing this response, or use the scroll button on the right, there is a serious lag from when I type and the words appear. Is that a glitch?

I am not mad or trying to argue, just want to explain in a way you understand as I am not technical.

                      Thanks again

                        1. As I said any custom styles, templates will not be compatible with vB4 and will have to be updated. Not sure how I can make that any clearer.

                        2. Sorry., still not clear to me what you are asking.

                        3. No one from vB ever told you that HTML posting by usergroup would be added to vB4.

To reiterate what has been said - there is no one click simple upgrade - the structure of vb4 is different, and will require some know how to update your themes. If you're not comfortable with changing a few things around, there are plenty of people out there that are willing to help. Just ask questions and you will get answers

As for your linking problem...you're over complicating it. Type in "Google". Highlight it. Click the "Insert Link" icon. a little pop up will appear where you type in the URL where you want it to go - in this case, you would simply type google.com and tada...it's done. Goooogle.

Why is it so incredibly important that you use HTML? What are you trying to do?

Why would you ever want to allow someone to use HTML other than yourself or, whomever is running your site and access to the ACP?

He only wants to allow HTML for himself. Not the rest of the forum.
