  • phpbb to VB

I wanted to start a discussion regaridng the limitations VB has when importing my phpbb forum software.

I run a small little Blog Forum found here, Blog Forum.

    1. What can be imported and what cannot?
    2. What are the "out of box" spam prevention modules?
    3. I have a dedicated server will Vb run smooth?
    4. What are mods like Are they all free, paid?
    5. What is custom design like, easy, hard, costly?
    6. What are my options for "out of box" SEO and Page Optimization?
    7. After converting what will my users have to do to access their account?
Do users keep post counts, warnings etc...

    Thanks,

    Brian

    Brian,

A long time ago I converted to vB from phpBB. (This was phpBB2, though.)

    1. All of your users, passwords, posts, post data, etc. will convert just fine. Your old forum theme won't come over, though.
    2. Out of the box, none, really. There's a host of addons at vBulletin.org that you can install and customize to your needs. My forum gets very little spam now.
    3. Depending on the specs of your server, it should run smooth. I run mine on a small-ish virtual private server and I have no issues. If phpBB runs fine, chances are vB will run fine.
    4. Most mods are free. There's some paid ones, such as vBSEO, the vB Development Tools (for managing source code, etc.), blogs, etc. (Some of this will change in vB4.)
    5. Custom design is, I think, easier than phpBB was. Most things are customized right through the AdminCP, rather than hacking individual files.
    6. See #2
    7. They just have to log in and get used to the changes.
