  • Before I take the insane step of pre-ordering an upgrade to the vb 4 suite

a product which was by all accounts ready for final by August 2009 (July the 15th unofiicially) and now has no solid release date, cannot currently be seen in action anywhere and is unlikely to be available before the expiry of the pre-sale offer I have a few questions, some of which I have asked in previous tickets and never got the courtesy of a response.

I see the term "visible source" is now missing from the feature list so I would like clarification that the vbulletin version 4 series both forum and suite remains visible source just as its predecessors were and will remain so for its duration ?

In view of the recently obvious changes in direction of vbulletin staff and its overall management under its new owners, accompanied with the lacking of a public beta and now the attempted taster of a current license holder discount for the new suite apparently available prior to gold release only, which at the full ticket price I personally consider it to be one that is now grossly inflated, it certainly raises suspicion for me on exactly what else is changing with the product that is being withheld prior to release, the above question on visible source is one such direct question. Is there anything else changing with the product and its license over and above what has been announced that new license are for the duration of each major version that may carry an impact on how I may use the product or other restrictions that may hinder 3rd party addon development ?

With the way the upcoming new licensing expires with each major version what future time span does IB/Jelsoft now intend to provide support for in the way of security fixes etc for each major series beyond the release of subsequent major version(s) ?

    Thats all for now.

Steve posted about the support timescales HERE.

The question about visible source is a very good one and one I'd also like clarifying - that would be a deal breaker for me, if the product isn't visible source I can't possibly buy it. So I too would like that clarifying quickly.

Does the license price include access to the source code?

Yes - vBulletin is a 'visible source' product, which means that you have access to the PHP source code of the product. You are free to modify the product in any way, provided you retain the vBulletin Solutions copyright notices. For information about vBulletin code modifications, visit vBulletin.org. Please note that we are unable to support any installations of vBulletin that have had the source code modified. For more information about the licensing implications of code modification, please review our license agreement.

Thanks Carrie...that's reassuring to know. It looks like I will be taking the pre sale offer shortly....despite many reservations.

Thanks for the link Mark B, however:

Ah, it's in the licensed customer feedback section. I'm not allowed to transpose any posts out of there into here.

Do you already have a license? If so, click here and enter your email address, this will make your account show up as licensed and give you access to that forum. You will need to use your customer number and password to access that page. The update of your account may take up to one hour.

If you don't yet have a license, then one of the support team will have to provide the information from the post I linked to, as it's not in a public forum.
