  • Professional Upgrade of Forums

I am running our Irish Powerboat Forums on VB 3.6.4. We also have VBSEO and Photopost Classifieds integrated into our forums at www.powerboat.ie/forums

Is it possible to pay for a one stop shop, full professional upgrade by VB staff?

Yeah. I'd like to know the answer to this too.

We offer a paid upgrade service. It only covers the default software though, it does not include any customized templates, or addon support.

I know that and I obviously don't expect that the Classifieds or the VBSEO will be upgraded.

What I do need though is assurance that after the professional upgrade of VB, that evrything will be working properly including the existing interaction between VBSEO and the Classifieds with VB?

I don't think that you can get an assurance of that.
The possibility is that your addons have to be upgraded as well.
Without upgrading them your forum could become a mess.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

            That's what I was afraid of !

Thanks very much for the helpful feedback.

I'll get the upgrade done by an experienced freelance VB specialist.

I've just asked VB to cancel and refund my upgrade order.

Hopefully there will be no problem with the refund as I'm a longstanding VB customer and already own quite a few VB licences and will be buying several more in coming weeks and months.

Thanks again for the helpful information.

                Hi,

I know that but as a non techie, I need a one stop shop.

If VB could assure me that they could upgrade my forums with out causing damage to or compromising the integrity of the other elements of my forums, I'd have been happy to let the order stand. As they can't, I have had no option but to cancel the order and out source to one professional installer who can carry out a safe upgrade for me.

                Kind regards,

                Stuart

I am nearly certain that they CANNOT guarantee any such thing. I believe their stance in these situations is to remove/disable all plugins and then upgrade the software. It would then be your responsibility to handle maintaining/upgrading/re-integrating those plugins with the software.

In short, I personally feel that the Professional Upgrade is not a good value. However I respect Jelsoft's stance that it is not their job to download and learn all the inner workings and idiosyncracies of potentially hundreds of plugins and add-ons and keep all of these in mind while performing such an upgrade. Be aware that vBulletin 4 will contain some of the functionality of vBSEO built-in.

If you do not wish to learn how to do these upgrades, you'll need to bring someone on staff to handle it. Assuming a straightforward upgrade of vBulletin and the 2 plugins you mentioned and there are no conflicts, the whole thing works out to probably <1 hour of work.

Thanks again for the info. As I said, I have no problem paying to have it professionally done. I just don't want to risk compromising my site.

I'm just waiting for someone from VB to contact me to refund my cancelled order and I'll place an order with one of the free lance professional VB experts to upgrade everything.

I have 5 VB licences to purchase in coming weeks and months. Should I wait to purchase until VB 4 is launched?

I think that we can close down answers to my original question now.

Thanks again for all of the feedback.

Buying vB3 right now will get you a copy of vB4. Prices may go up afterwards.
