Owner of License

Hi folks, quick question.

I' have vbulletin owned license under my name and I was using it but I am no longer associated with that forum any longer. However, that forum is still online, so does that mean if I remove the domain from the members area they will need to get there own license and I'm entitled to use mine elsewhere?

As hilarious as that would be -- the files on the server are your responsibility so you need to make sure that they get deleted / replaced with the new files from the new license they purchase.

Yes like the other one said you are correct but if they don't get their own license and keep using your files illegal then your license can be revoked if you have bad luck.

But would that not put your license in danger? considering that instance has to be removed before you can legally install another. As it contains your license number, sticky situation comes to my mind.

Honestly, the easiest and cleanest way to handle this is to just transfer the vBulletin license (and domain if applicable) to them. Do it for reasonable cash if it's a money making site, or do it for the remainder of the investment on your licence/name if you just want to be done with it.

Jelsoft will transfer the vb license to another user at no cost to either party, you just gotta initiate the process. If you need another license down the road, or even if you need it now, just buy another one.

Although that IS logical, if he has now left the site, why should he have to pay the full rpice for a brand new licence when he already has one? I mean from his point of view hell be wanting to avoid spending more money then he has to, and if he wants to use his own licence, transferring it to someone else to avoid legal trouble and then having to buy a new one would be a cost to him.

Personally I would take a few steps I would:
1) inform the current management of the site that I am transferring my licence away and that they need to buy a new one and reupload the sites files or remove the site
2) I would then change the URL in the members area
3) I would inform via a support ticket, to go on record, of the situation.

If at this point I have received no notification from the current site management to say they have their own licence then I'd contact them again to ask, if no reply then, then I would report for piracy.

I would at this point contact support via a support ticket asking if the current licence could be revoked and replaced with a new licence number to dissassociate my licence with that site completely and to void the licence number that is associated with that site. That way I cant then accidently be seen as using my licence on more then one site.

That said, at this point an official response would be better and would give more reliable information.

I guess you missed the part where I said "for the remainder of the investment".

Let's assume there are six months remaining on the activity of his owned license.

Owned license cost is $180 once plus annual renewal of $40. Six months left until renewal, charge them $160 add $20 of your own money and buy another owned license, which will now give him a full year's worth of access to downloads rather than just the six months remaining on the existing license. He won't spend any more money than he would have spent to get the extra six months he'll get on the new license.

If the new owners of the site are agreeable and want to stay legal, this is a much easier route to go. Only if they refuse to pay this obviously equitable amount to stay legal, then go the route you suggested.
