The owned license will allow you to run the software on your server for an unlimited amount of time and allows access to all new versions for one year. After the year, you can purchase a renewal of this access.

Smoke and mirrors springs to mind.
The process will be watched very closely in relation to terms and conditions plus small print.

Jelsoft reserves the right to modify these terms at any time.

I'm going to renew my four owned licenses shortly as it's my understanding when I signed up / joined that I get 1 year of free updates to the vBulletin Forum Software no matter what version it becomes within that year.Aviation Web

Yes, I believe its a pretty accepted thing in the VB community that if you keep your renewal up, you get the upgrades for free... I would imagine that to most people that's the whole point of paying the renewal in the first place.
I'm no lawyer, but could you imagine the effect a class action lawsuit might have on the company IF the ruling went against you?
I like the different versions... heck I'd like to see one that's just forums and photo albums.. no social networking/friends or any of that crap.
If I end up having to re-purchase my license while still under software assurance... lets just say I will not go quietly into that good night and there would be a very good chance that I'd just end up changing products for no other reason than to say 'I don't do business with those kinds of people'.
Vote with your wallet... and be sure to tell your friends.

The power of real social networking may become apparent to IB if they do change the licensing structure.

I find it amazing that Steve or one of the other devs hasn't even commented on this. Its had way over 1000 views and 4 pages of replies. I can understand him not having a definate answer, but maybe just an insiders suggestion would be worth far more than all this speculation.
I will upgrade and pay the $60, but I won't be happy should vb4 cost me more....It's an omen...

Hello,
do have I understand fine?
For example I have now Owned non-active license (stopped at version 3.7.3), well, when vB 4 comes out I need to pay as an extra fee and not a normal upgrade (renewall license) like now $60 to get it?
If this is the situation I quick jump to another Board Platform

From what I gather the options are;
a) pay $60 for a renewal. Then pay a discounted price for vb4.
b) don't pay $60 now. And pay 100% of the price for vb4.
Apart from that, nothing else is known...and that's not even official yet. It's an omen...
