  • SMF to VB Migration

Currently our gaming community forums are SMF but we are interested in possibly migrating over to VB. We have had some issues with our database in the past when trying to setup with our hosting company so I have a few questions.

    1. Is there a way to bring over all our threads, users, membergroups, sub-groups, permissions, etc?

    2. Would we need to re-install our database on our host server?

    3. How long does a complete migration take?

    4. Does VB offer a service where the entire migration and upload to server is done for you? If so is there a fee and what is that fee?

    5. Does "said" migration tool cost any money?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    1. Yes, we have an importer for SMF. You can read about it here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex_smf

Please note that since SMF passwords are encrypted, they cannot be imported. Your users will need to reset their passwords after the import. You can read more about this here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex_passwords

    2. You would have to install vB and it's database on the same server as your SMF is installed.

    3. That depends on the size of the data you are importing. Anywhere from a few minutes to hours.

    4. We do not have an import service available at this time, but we are available for help and support if you need it.

Please read the online Impex import instructions here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex

    5. No, the Impex importer is free with the purchase of a license.
