  • Thinking of switching from PHPBB2

    Hello,

I have a community with about 6600 users and running on PHPBB 2.0.22

I am seriously considering switching to either VBulletin or PHPBB3 (i am not trying to start a comparison debate). But the main reason is that my PHPBB2 is heavily modded... and upgrading is horribly difficult (has to be done manually... entering code into pages and such) and it has become very buggy...

Before i make a decision (and pay 160$)... i still had a couple of questions in regards to VBulletin functionality.

1- Can the users chose whether they want the forum displayed in English or French (multi-language support)?

2- Is there a way to have banners displayed at the top of the webite (rotating banners or fixed banners)? Something like having them displayed in the forum message. (to make things clear... you can have a look here: http://www.m4e.com/forum ). Look at the 3 banners displayed at the top please as an example.

3- Does VBulletin come with a portal? If not, are there any free portals for VBulletin? If there is a portal, can someone give me a link as an example please.

4- What does the spam bot prevention look like (how good is it in preventing them from registering?)?

5- How easy is it to transfer the posts and member list from phpBB2 to VBulletin? My phpBB forum is heavily modded (mostly to make it do what VBulletin already does )

I guess that's it for now Thank you all very much for your help !!!

Thank you for your reply ! That portal definately looks very nice and i will be using it if i switch. Can you decide to add a block to the portal and put custom stuff in it (like images for example)?

You can definately add custom blocks and change the layout. You can also create custom pages that integrated into your forum. For example, here are the 2 pages on my site created using vBAdvanced.

        http://www.sportbikers.net/forums/index.php?page=RSS
        http://www.600rrforum.com/index.php?pageid=linklove

Custom welcome block (you'll see something slightly different when not logged in).

haha... how sweet is it that you also have a sportbike website

Thank you for your reply. I couldn't help but notice that you had a rotating banner on the top right hand side of your website. How hard/easy was it to add? can this be added anywhere on the site? Like where mine appear on my website?

Yeah, I checked out your site before replying

It's an external program that I use, just put the code in the parent template and it applies to all child templates. Once a customer, you can download all the mods you want over at vbulletin.org . vB has a very intuitive and smart template system compare to phpBB. If you edit the parent template, all child styles and templates will inherit the changes so you don't have to go and edit each style. Of course, you also have the option to customize the child template if you want it to be different.

The other thing is modding, there's VERY little manual coding. Almost all of the time, you just import an XML file and the modification is complete. How sweet is that? I've used phpBB before, it's a pain.

              Hello,

Thank you for your interest in the vBulletin Forum Software and for contacting vBulletin Sales.

1- Can the users chose whether they want the forum displayed in English or French (multi-language support)?
vBulletin includes a Language Manager in the admin control panel. This allows you to translate the vBulletin interface into your own language or several languages, as well as being able to import language packs created others. Your users can then select the language they prefer to view the board in.

We do have a Languages & Phrases forum where you can find packs donated by our customers and also receive help for creating your own:

              http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=87

Also, here's the forum containing downloads of the current Language Packs made available by our customers:

              http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=96

Please note, the Language Management System only covers the board text and not individual posts. The posts themselves will be displayed in the original language they were written in.

And yes, we have French language packs offered by customers who translated it.

The user can choose at any point to switch to a different language.

2- Is there a way to have banners displayed at the top of the webite (rotating banners or fixed banners)? Something like having them displayed in the forum message. (to make things clear... you can have a look here: http://www.m4e.com/forum ). Look at the 3 banners displayed at the top please as an example.
vBulletin does not come with a banner rotating feature, but a lot of forums use it. There are ad location templates in 3.7 to easily add your banner code. And 3.6's header templates and other templates and using plugins and conditionals allowing you to easily set this up too.

              There are resources here: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=120
and on vBulletin.org - all free for download.

3- Does VBulletin come with a portal? If not, are there any free portals for VBulletin? If there is a portal, can someone give me a link as an example please.
No it does not. There are free ones like vbadvanced and other products, you can find them via google and/or vbulletin.org (vbulletin.org is our official sister web site, vbadvanced is not)

4- What does the spam bot prevention look like (how good is it in preventing them from registering?)?
It is very effective. I run other PHP software on my sites too and they constantly get spammed, despite captcha support and other meassures. vB is constantly tweaking. 3.7 even has 3 different ways of fighting automated registration and even akismet support to handle spam globally on the net. Also, it has flood protections and usergroup and forum settings and permissions to help set up situations to make it harder for newcomers to spam. And with the inline moderation tools vb offers by default it is very easy to handle any spam that does come through afterwards quite easily.

5- How easy is it to transfer the posts and member list from phpBB2 to VBulletin? My phpBB forum is heavily modded (mostly to make it do what VBulletin already does )
our impex software expects the default tables etc, if yours is heavily modded we can not guarantee it will work. But I have seen enough cases where it went without a problem.

Here is the status of the current import scripts vBulletin supports:

              http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/main/impex_systems

Note: At this time the vBulletin import script ImpEx only work with vBulletin 3.5.0 and above. If you perhaps run an older version of vBulletin you will need to upgrade to latest stable release.

Here is the Online Manual for the Impex system:
              http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex

And please view the 'After the Import' instructions here:
              http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex_cleanup

vBulletin is fully customizable. You get full access to the HTML and CSS code. You can customize 100% of the look and feel as well as the functionality in the system so that it fits your needs and is completely integrated into your site.

You can read about our styling and customization tools in our online documentation at:
              http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/styles_and_templates

We also have an aftermarket customization community setup at http://www.vbulletin.org. There you can find hundreds of free style packs as well as free addon products and plugins that can enhance the functionality of vBulletin installation.

Unfortunately due to the visible source nature of PHP (the programming language vBulletin is written in), sending out trial copies is not a feasible option, as any limitations we put in could be very easily circumvented.

We do have a live demo of vBulletin, including full access to the admin control panel. You can set one up for your own use from this page (the demo automatically expires after 24 hours):

              http://www.vbulletin.com/admindemo.php

You can also download a test script to run on your server to see if it's compatible with vBulletin. You can get this script here:

              http://files.vbulletin.com/vb_test.zip

The instructions for this are in this thread:

              http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=181384

Let me know if you have any further questions.

              All the best,

                Thank you both very much.

You pretty much answered all of my questions. My only worry is the importing of the phpBB tables to vBulletin.

                I hope it works...

I am sure it will go fine. Impex comes with free support may things go wrong. And impex won't touch your phpbb database. So you won't loose any data.

                      http://www.vBulletin.com/order/

once you have the vb license you can download impex from the members' area at no cost. impex works with 3.6 of vbulletin. since 3.7 is in beta. but you can afterwards upgrade from 3.6 to 3.7 if you wish (at no cost) to get the latest features such as social networking, etc.

                        Thank you.

I just bought the 160$ license and was curious as to why it says that it expires in march 2009.

That's the 1 year free support/updates, not the license itself.

With an owned license you can run the software forever - that doesn't end. The listed expiration is for your access to the download new versions from the Members Area. You get one year of free upgrades with your license. After this the current cost is just $30/yr for continued access to new versions. However, this is optional and you are allowed to continue running your current version for as long as you like.

You will continue to have download access for any versions released while your license was active.
