  • Is this legit?

Got this in email this morning, it looks real, but I'm always wary of password related emails I get, so I wanted to ask.

As part of a general review of our operations, and in line with security best practices, a new password has been generated for your vBulletin customer account.

    Your new password is:
    ******

You will need to make a note of this password, as it is your key to access the vBulletin Members' Area, where you can download vBulletin products and submit support tickets.

Your customer number has not changed, and this does not affect any accounts you may have registered on any vBulletin forums.

Please note that you will also need to provide a new security question and answer on your first log-in.

Yep, totally legit. I got one too along with everyone else.

I'm wary of "hey, here's a new password, login here to use it" emails. I've been doing email since around 1986, and have always thought those were odd, even before the era of phishing and all that.

It is very smart to confirm. And yes, it is real. To avoid potential abuse by users who fake mail, never click on links in email. Just manually type the url and login.

I always do that. But still, I wanted to check it out just the same.

In case it WASN'T legit, you guys would probably want to know about it.

I've gotten one before so it was not a surprise to me.

That alone isn't a reason to trust it. I get bank statement email from my bank all the time, doesn't mean I trust them - I do what was mentioned above. Never EVER click on links in emails like that.

Well, what you get them more than once, you know what to check for and what to do. As far as not clicking on strange links, that is a given for anyone who owns a comuter. I didn't think I had to add that to what you were asking. You asked if it was legit and I said it was.

                  Well that's great - I didn't get one and can't log-in now!!

Edit - got a new one from the lost password link.

Strange that you didn't get the first one, but glad you got the second email. It might be your mail hasn't been sent yet and it could arrive later.

Small suggestion Floris - could announcements like these be placed in the 'Announcements' forum at the time they're issued so that an immediate check can be made rather than hunting through different forums (e.g. is this really a pre-sale question?) for a Mod confirming it?
