    Hello all,

I read this a few hours ago and wanted to know if this is true and if there is an exact quote in writing somewhere on the site before I make my purchase.

The leased and owned licenses are identical. You can purchase the leased license for $85 and then within 60 days you can upgrade to the owned license for another $85.
    ?

Also how could I convert all the info that I have of phpbb to vb?

    Hello,

Thank you for your interest in the vBulletin Forum Software and for contacting vBulletin Sales.

Yes, you are right. The owned license and the leased license are identical. You will not get less features or options or functionality if you get a leased license. The only difference is that the leased license is a lease for $85 for 12 months. After 12 months you have to either stop using vBulletin, or renew the license for $85 for 12 more months. (or upgrade for $160 to an owned license).

Within 60 days after the purchase of the leased license you can upgrade for a fee to the owned license, the upgrade free is $85.

The owned license is $160, which is a one time fee, and gives you unlimited time to run vBulletin on your site.

Yes, we have an import script that allows you to convert your data over from phpBB to vBulletin. http://www.vBulletin.com/docs/html/impex has more information about the impex system, and the tier 1 script phpBB/phpBB2

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    All the best,

Nice to see the upgrade option prior to 60 days, I think I'll end up going with the leased option then decide if I want to upgrade to the owned. I was debating on buying the owned vs the leased licenses. Seems like it would take the 3rd year before you would see the benefit of the owned license.

        $160.00 + 60.00 (2 years updates) = $220.00

        $85.00 x 3 (same 3 years on leased) = $255.00

Seems kinda hard to justify the up front price, as 3 years is a long time on the net. Unless of course someone can point out a good reason to buy the owned license that I might be missing. I don't mind spending the money, but I also don't like to toss more out the door than I need too.

I went with the Owned license so I didn't have wory about renewing the Leased license. If you buy the Owned license you don't have to pay the $30.00 renewal fee the moment your license expires. If your Owned license does expire you'll still get support and still be able to download vBulletin but only the versions available when your license expired. So let's say you buy an Owned license today and in 12 months they announce version 4.0.0. You can wait until 4.0.0 is released then renew your license.

It does not expire the only thing that expires if you dont renew when you have an owned license is the ability to download patches/updates for the latest forum software.

With an owned license you can run the software forever - that doesn't end. The listed expiration is for your access to the download new versions from the Members Area. You get one year of free upgrades with your license. After this the current cost is just $30/yr for continued access to new versions. However, this is optional and you are allowed to continue running your current version for as long as you like.

You will continue to have download access for any versions released while your license was active.
