  • URL Question

Ok i am considering buying a vB license soon and there is one thing i would just like to have confirmed.

Is it allowed to have 2 different URL's to the same board (with the same content as per the license agreement) as in this example?:

    http://www.domain.tld/forum
    and:
    http://forum.domain.tld

Or would that require a seperate license and/or the forum to be in the forum sub-directory of both host names?

    Thanks in advance.

If one domain is the live forum, and the other domain is an alias to this live forum, yes. You can do that without having to buy another license.

You can have as many urls link as you want to the one instance running. You will start to require additional licenses if each URL appears as a separate forum instance.

      Thanks for the reply.

I am intending on only installing the forum to one location on the webserver itself and using only one DB with the 2 different URL's linking to the same place in the server's file system.

      So again Thank you.

You can do that but keep in mind that you'll end up with a duplicate content penalty from the search engines. You should really pick one and then 301 the other.

Im not worried about the forum being indexed on search engines, in fact i may even disallow search engines from crawling the forum using robots.txt or similar methods anyway.

At present with my current forum i have got the forum.domain.tld redirecting to the www.domain.tld/forum url anyway so i may just leave that as is. I was just considering future options.

There may possibly be a way to provide a robots.txt for one URl but not the other using some method within the web servers configuration so only one of the URL's can be crawledby search engines.

          Anyway thanks for answering.

And if all goes well i may soon be a customer too.

Not really, it is not duplicate content. It is an alias to the forum. Many high end companies do this too and have all their content indexed just fine with PR6 and higher.

If there are two URLs to find the same page and both return a 200 response code then you will be looking a duplicate content penalty if search engines find both. This is especially bad on a forum where you would have thousands, if not millions of duplicate pages. I was at PubCon the end of last year and they went over this in almost every session.

If you're going to have two ways to get to your pages then you really need to 301 one to the other. I used to have a site that could be accessed as forum.domain.tld and as www.domain.tld/forum and as soon as I 301ed the first to the second I saw a huge jump in indexed pages and my PR increased as well.
