  • I've used and paid for my licence since 2002 and if VB increase there fee's, well sorry they have lost me as a customer.

Shame they dont do a 10 site limit licence or something like that for a one off fee. I have 2 sites running and at $320 its a lot of cash.

So if we *ever* increase prices we lose you as a customer? Even though with inflation the real cost of vB is less that it was in 2002? We aren't allowed to even keep up with inflation?

Do you tell this to everyone you purchase from? Have you stopped buying gas.

You're comaparing forum software to gas? I see a few posts in this thread comapring VB to cars, gas and cable television. While VB is great it's not that great. raising prices is ok, but raising to $249 as suggested is a bit much. Also if/when prices get raised what does that mean for existing license holders?

Who said we were raising prices? Why are you getting so upset about something no one ever said is happening? Besides my understanding is that some non-Jelsoft person suggested $249 for a lifetime license that does not require further renewals for continued access to upgrades. This has nothing to do with existing prices.

And I'm sorry if my comment about gas prices was too difficult to understand. I was responding to the suggestion that if we ever raise prices we would lose him as a customer. That implies, of course, that he applies the same standards to everyone he purchases from. Otherwise why would we be singled out as not being allowed to ever raises prices?

I was simply pointing out a flaw in this line of reasoning.

I've always thought it would be nice to see a discounted price for 2nd owned licences, but in all honesty $160 is not that bad, considering we're getting such a class product. I wouldn't walk if prices increased, but I guess that depends on the increase. I eventually stopped using a car because of the price of fuel in the UK! However if it went up too much, I would have to reconsider my pending 2nd purchase but only because its hard to find two lots of access support, nothing to do with the actual cost of the licence Just seeing what Kier has pulled out of the bag for 3.6 if it was $200 I'd still happily pay. We're also lucky in the UK as the exchange rate is in our favour.

Actually, I think it was Floris who made the comment, hardly a "non-Jelsoft person." I think that may be related to why people seem upset.

                • Ahhh, you're right:

However he was talking about a perpetual license for $249 though. Nonetheless Floris doesn't set prices and it would have bene better not to inject personal opinions on this since they can be easily misconstrued.

The bottom line is that due to inflation, vBulletin prices are actually cheaper now then they have been at any other time. Most people would applaud us for holding the line on prices for 6 years and taking the inflation hit while our competitors raise theirs. But I guess the old adage applies - You can't please everyone!

                  • Yup. Personally I have no problems accepting the current pricing-tier, although I can understand some do, and why they may react to the comment Floris made, even if he made it as a lay person rather than a Jelsoft-employee despite not pointing that out.

                    • So the point is that some people don't think we ever have the right to raise prices regardless of inflation, increased costs or any other factor, even if they accept increased prices for every other product they buy.

Yep, I think I got it.

Trust me that if you were to raise your prices you would have made less profit. vBulletin is quite obviously the most amazing forum software for sale. A quality item which is cheaper than other worse ones really attract a lot of people. I assure you that many people who hesitate between VB and competitors come to conclusions based on price.

Not only did you do a great job holding your prices, it is also a good market strategy

I personally spent 240$ on vBulletin. I had a leased lisence and then bought a full one once it expired.

On topic: Why did you buy the leased lisence then? What did you expect? You should have saved up for a full lisence. No offense, but you have nobody to blame but yourself.

in what world? Not this one. I made the jump from phpbb to vB... there is NO comparison. Not even close. Every single standard feature of vB you have to have a hack for on phpbb. No thanks

I don't think that's the point at all Steve... relax. I can see having to raise the price some due to inflation. That is perfectly understandable. Still I have to agree that your gas price analogy doesn't really fit. Gas goes up a few cents here and there. When Floris interjected his thoughts on raising it to $240... that's when the top flew off, lol. We're talking about a jump of $80 there.

                              Anyway....

I doubt that 250 USD price tag would scare off the general majority of the customers honestly.
