    That is the difference

    Thats pure bunk. My experiences with both sites is that VB and IPB release patches for exploits in roughly about the same amount of time after one is PROVEN found. Not just by some guys experience. First they have to have it shown or proven that one even exists and be able to duplicate it. A majority of the time admins/super mods have poor passwords that are easy to crack. That or have hacks installed that have exploits. Yet they somehow try and blame VB or IPB for someone hacking into their site through said hacks. That in and of itself is not IPB or Jelsofts problem nor does it reflect their security.

    If you add a hack to a website and it has a backdoor or exploit that allows someone to be able to execute code or such....then it has nothing to do with either of the forum software but rather the hack itself, which is out of both companies hands. Neither IPB or VB supports forums that have hacks installed since its altered the original code and compromises the security of that website as is. And theres a good reason for it. Over 95% of hacking attempts are usually done through hacks that are installed or admins/mods that havent learned to have at least a 10 letter and number combination and not some 5 letter/number combinaton which are fairly easy for hackers to figure out.

    Also it comes down to opinion about coding. Not fact.

      Now back then i would have gone with the supreme package.
      Kind of troublesome, paypal deactivated, now in china.
      Maybe rin has something here. What if there was a larger incentive package to put more money upfront for longer renewal periods?

      So let's say..

      $30.00 - One Year Additional Download Access
      $55.00 - Two Years Additional Access
      $80.00 - Three Years Access

      and so forth...more of an incentive to renew longer?

        Personally, I'd go for the max renewal whatever the period or cost. First and foremost because I have a busy day, and anything which I can keep tabs on over a much longer time-frame, all the better. I'd even settle for extended renewals at an increased cost, but that's just me.

          Yes and no, but vbulletin patched this before IPB
          • A bug in Internet Explorer 5.0+ which allows a JPEG image to be uploaded with a GIF header containing malicious HTML / javascript code.
          • Potential SQL injection
          • Potential arbitrary PHP code execution

          Alot of IPB sites got done because IPB took its time on that one.

                Lets hope you will never earn so much out of vB licenses then.

                  I'm affraid the prises have to raise a little bit..

                  $9999999999.00

                  Anyway!
                  I didn't saw any advantage of a leased licence. I have 2 bought ones, I'm happy with it!

                    Fact: VB and IPB are 2 different forum products and as such are not coded the same. Just because say VB might have an sql injection issue and releases a patch today for it, does not mean IPB, PHPBB, MYBB, etc will or will need to too. As well, it has to be duplicated. If it can't be duplicated...then how can one know its even a problem and not an isolated incident, let alone know how to fix the problem?

                    I own lifetimes for both IPB and VB and have never had a problem with either. What you are talking about is a minority. We dont know if any problems stated above were caused by hacks (which over 95% of the time it is), server vulnerabilities, poor password creation, etc. rather than forum software. As well, theres a certain security website that shows that VB has had more vulnerabilities than IPB. But does that make either board less? No. As long as the problem is fixed as soon as reasonably possible, no.

                      This is not an IPB vs. VB topic. Please keep it that way.

                        Would it be possible to just encode certain parts of a php file?
                        The reason I ask is because the developers can encode their "call-back" function in whichever script they put the "call-back" function into.

                        PHP Code:
                        <?php

                        //===== Start Encode ======\\

                            //do the call back code here

                        //===== End Encode ======\\

                        /*check if call-back feature has been deleted
                           but don't make it obvious so nullifiers can't remove this part as well.*/

                        ?>
                        If the encoded part is deleted then the conditional after it will detect it and will kill the script.

                          Unfortunately, no matter how you approach this, as long as vBulletin is viewable and modifiable, partially or completely, it's only a matter of time before any measures taken to help battle piracy and the like will be rendered useless.

                            Where exactly did a thread about "Getting rid of the leased license" change to vBulletin's call to home function?

                              I believe someone made the suggestion about allowing the leased license to use vB for life, but encrypt the files.

                                Nowhere, except my post was in reply to harmor's post regarding partially encrypted PHP files, a post I didn't much care to quote.
