  • I find this all rather amusing.

Unless you are on a crappy server, it costs money to have that server.

Unless you make your own skins or use the default one or know someone that does it for free, it costs money to make the skins or buy one.

Long story short, The current price point, especially for what you are getting, is great.

As for leased...it's like leasing a car. You're allowed to use it for awhile. But after the time period is over, you must return it, unless you plan on buying it in full. Its a good testing period to find out if its something you want. But at the end of it, what do you have to show for it?

It doesnt cost much for a lifetime license. And its more rewarding in the long term. And considering you arent getting a stripped down version, or a zend encoded version, there really isnt much to complain about imo.

I purchased my VB leased license in May of 2005 and obviously it expired and I had to remove the software, which I did. So basically I'm out $85 and what do I have to show for it?...... Nothing. I have no issues with the cost of the software itself but rather the amount of time a leased license holder is allowed to use the software.
Consider how much you spend on a server a year. Or if you lease a car then bring it back after the end of the lease, what do you have to show for it. All that money spent on the server costs and what do you have to show for it?

Let's be honest here, folks. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but if you can't afford a $160 one-time piece of software that lasts a year, perhaps you should re-examine your finances.
That is the best post in this thread yet.

I can't believe it's gone this long. vB offers the best value for the money that I have ever seen. The licensing fees are a bargain. I have licenses for several programs and when I need support it's up to me to search a forum. That is their level of support.

And someone correct me if I'm wrong, no one is twisting anyone's arm to use vB? My site would not be where it is today if it wasn't for vB.

I was forced at gunpoint to buy VB. That's how capitalism works.

I know it is, Zachery. vB is a very good deal. I don't think that anyone has disputed that at all. Like I posted before on this thread, I think some panicked when Floris said he thought the price should be raised to $249, lol. Really, this has all been blown wayyyyy out of proportion.

                  vBulletin Owned license - $160
                  Gas - $0.95/gallon

                  2006 -
                  vBulletin Owned license - $160
                  Gas - $3.10/gallon

Sorry if the point I was making wasn't understood. We have not incrreased prices even when we have been hit with inflation, higher costs, and competitiors raising their prices. I personally do not know of very many companies that have done anything similar. I would have thought our record speaks for itself.
I didn't say a few cents. I said a few cents here and there... meaning not jumping up at one time, like from $160 to $249 all at once. Jelsoft's record does speak for itself and I'm sure that every single one of us here appreciates the fact that the price hasn't been raised. NOONE has disputed that fact. That wasn't even the point, as I posted above.
Oh, and gas where I am is 2.59

I did, and saved for months to be able to purchase vB.

I betcha Floris didn't know that his post was gonna cause such an uproar, LOL.

                  • Using Steve's quote and adding the TV like I mentioned earlier, While Gas and most other items have gone up, a new TV and vB license are a bargain!

                    Average TV Set (19") - $200

                    Average TV Set (19") - $120
Actually I would like to see an Perpetual license added as an option to the order page...

                    Leased - $85
                    Owned - $160
                    Perpetual - $249 (or 250)

The perpetual license would be equivalent to buying an owned license and 3 years additional d/l access in one shot, but you get the rest time as a bonus. For those with owned already, there could be an upgrade of $90-$120 or somewhere in that neighbourhood. I believe a lot of people and corporations would use the 3rd option.

                    • Hey let's compare something whose price drops because the technology never changes (TV) to something that is constantly upgraded and supported by a large team of programmers and staff (VB). Yeah!

                        • Actually TV technology does change. Most are now digital and have all kinds of options when the old TVs had the dials. Many people wish they still had dials instead of spending more time reading the instructions then it would to set up a vB board! You're right, vB is supporteed well while you just toss the TV when it crash and burns and buy a new one.

A 19 inch TV from 5 years ago is pretty much the same as a 19 inch TV from today. The technology does not have to be drastically reworked. You're not redesigning CRTs or anything major, you're tweaking a few things.

With VB they're adding all sorts of new features and making the software MUCH more potent. There's a HUGE difference.
