How easy is it to run ads around vB

I want to set up a discussion forum with ads up either side and banners. Is this possible in vB or should i be looking at wraping something like joomla around a vB page

That's possible, you could simply edit the templates and add your advertisements there.

Also can the width of the thread and forums be varied easily to allow for this up both sides. or does it become unworkable with ads up both sides.

I've seen Google Ads used often, and I've also seen ads up both sides, though I've never used either myself.
